This adapter adapts full size MIG spool carriers that natively use a large 12" spool of wire to a medium size 8" spool of wire. 12" spools normally hold between 30 to 44 lbs. of steel solid wire with 8" spools holding between 10 and 12 lbs of steel wire. For Aluminum, this is adapts 16-22 lb. wire spool capacity down to 5-6 lb. wire spool. The actual diameters are still nominally the same as 8" and 12" spool sizes, but the weight will vary based on the wire type and manufacturer. When in doubt, measure the diameter of the wire spool you wish to use.
NOTICE: The spool adapter has a nipple that is extended to engage the smaller spool and allows the spool carrier to hold proper tension to prevent excess spool off of wire after wire stops feeding. This nipple may need to be trimmed on certain spools of wire, especially spools made from plastic as the hole in the spool may be too shallow to allow the full length of the nipple to engage and may prevent the spool from being positioned correctly on the carrier. If this is the case, saw, file or otherwise trim the nipple to the required length.
